Ocean Park Day for 2010! Sat. June 19th.
Tenth annual Ocean Park Day 'bigger and better'
Event a 'huge success'
Peace Arch News Wednesday, June 23rd 2010 by Hannah Sutherland (With permission)
Last weekend's Ocean Park Day was the most successful in the event's 10-year history, despite a power outage that resulted after a bird hit a transformer. "We had a generator for the stage, so the music kept going," said Laura Thibeault, past-president of the Ocean Park Business Association.
"It was still a huge success."Although some cash registers were down for a couple hours during the outage, 'l'hibeault said businesses - which offered special promotions for the June 19th festival - experienced an increase in shoppers. "Sales were still way up." The day of festivities was held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. around 16 Avenue and 128 Street, and included a Kiwanis Club barbecue, live music, clowns, stilt walkers and a 24-foot climbing wall.
Toy store Cotton 'N' Crayon celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special play day for kids, while Starbucks raised money with a dunk tank. Other fundraisers also proved successful, including a draw that collected close to $1,000 and raffle tickets sold by Southridge students, who raised $750.00 Funds from both efforts will go towards next year's event.
"There was all kinds of involvement," Thibeault said. "Every year it gets bigger and better."
Down the street, a celebration featuring live music and face painting recognized the official opening of Sanford Hall and Kwomais Lodge. "The fact that Kwomais Point Park had their grand opening the same day meant that we had people walking from Kwomais Park, up to the Ocean Park Community Hall, and throughout the Ocean Park area," Thibeault said. "It was a wonderful add-on to the event."
People came from all over the Lower Mainland to take in the festivities, she noted, and there were more young families than seen in past years. "The place was packed," Thibeault said. "It was just a really good party."
Festivities during Ocean Park Day included some
entertainment with Korki the Clown.
