"This Month the OPBA member is Beth Faester Optician at Eurovision.

Beth supports "Conexions 2009" in Guatemala.

Ms. Beth Faester, Optician at Eurovision, and OPBA member has been busy recently supporting a service group in Guatemala-"Conexions 2009!". Beth is pictured left getting the glasses ready for the long trip to Guatemala.

Beth had heard from Gladys Loewen, a volunteer with this group of there project and she offered to support by cause by donating reading glasses. Through the generosity of Eurovision as well as friends and fellow choir members, Gladys was able to travel to Guatemala with 170 pair of reading glasses. Beth checked out the prescription and condition of the glasses donated by friends and choir members using equipment from her business.

Using a Spanish reading chart, reading clinics were held in Tierra Linda, a mountain village and in a senior’s residence in Guatemala City. These reading clinics supplemented the clinics offered by the medical team.

For the women who were illiterate in Tierra Linda, a needle and thread exercise was used to determine the need for reading glasses.

One of the teenagers in the group offered face painting for children while their parents waited in line in the medical clinic. Through the 4 clinics, 110 pairs of reading glasses were dispensed. Some glasses were also given to other people we came in contact with such as a waiter in the hotel and a bus driver.

Gladys Loewen, noted that she had met Beth last fall through their involvement with a local choir. At a social event following the Christmas concert, Gladys shared with some of the members that she was thinking of signing up for a volunteer trip. Beth immediately offered to participate and support the group by offering the glasses, even though she did not know Gladys. Beth had a basic trust and instinct, in this appeal to offer her support in the project. On behalf of the Group Gladys would like to thank Beth Faester, and Eurovision, for this commitment to supporting others in need.
